Return on Willingness™

The Standard Before the Result

Before a customer makes a decision, a seller has decisions to make.

How thoroughly will I prepare? What question needs to be asked? What useful idea deserves attention? What will I do to follow through?

Return on Willingness begins with the decision to place your full commitment behind something that matters—and do all you can while you still can, before you know whether the work will pay off.

In selling, that commitment shapes how you prepare, contribute, guide decisions, and remain responsible after the sale.

What Willingness Looks Like in Selling

01

Prepare

Study the account, review what has changed, and prepare questions that fit the customer's situation. Do the work before the meeting so you can listen carefully and contribute something useful.

02

Initiate

Make the call. Ask for the meeting. Raise the important question. Take responsible initiative rather than waiting until you feel completely ready.

03

Contribute

Bring something the customer can use: A thoughtful question, relevant perspective, an overlooked possibility, or the expertise of a teammate. Make your contribution serve the customer's decision.

04

Stay Engaged

Carry responsibility between meetings. Clarify what remains unresolved, coordinate the right support, and keep the next meaningful action visible. Respect the customer's timing while maintaining continuity.

05

Follow Through

Complete what you promise. Confirm responsibilities and next steps. After the business is won, stay involved in helping your organization deliver the promised value and earn the customer's continued trust.

Choose Your Commitment

The Standard Belongs to the Seller

Return on Willingness begins with choosing where to place your full commitment. Serve every customer with professionalism, and focus your time, energy, and attention on opportunities where your organization can create meaningful value.

When the fit is real, the recommendation is sound, and your organization can deliver, bring the preparation, judgment, initiative, and follow-through required to earn the business the right way.

The final yes belongs to the client; the standard belongs to the seller.

The Return Beyond the Order

Winning matters. Willingness means bringing your best work before the outcome is known, with room to learn, adjust, and improve. The return can extend beyond the order through confidence, better performance, trust, opportunity, and self-respect built along the way.

What can you do today to prepare more fully, contribute something useful, or follow through on a commitment?

From Principle to Practice

The Fuel Behind The Client Clincher System

The Client Clincher System gives professional selling a structure. Return on Willingness puts that structure into action. It is the commitment behind preparing before the meeting, understanding before recommending, bringing forward what deserves attention, and carrying responsibility through the decision and beyond the sale.

Today's performance is yesterday's willingness made visible.

A Note from Grant

I first learned the principle behind Return on Willingness in athletics and deepened my understanding through selling, sales leadership, and years of working with customers. My colleague Joe McNames helped give it a name while we were developing a keynote together.

Today, it shapes how I prepare, contribute, support the people counting on me, and follow through on my commitments. As a foundational principle of The Client Clincher System, it reflects a personal standard: Choose what deserves your full commitment, then put that commitment into action before the outcome is known.

Do all you can today so you can look back with confidence and say, "I gave it everything I had while I still had the chance."
